Skygrabber is an absorbing musical meditation composed by Tokyo-based JR Chaparro in conjunction with a showing by London artist Lucas Dillon.
Skygrabber was developed as part of Lucas Dillon's showing, Earthtone, at the Freehouse Gallery in London from May to June 2019.
The piece was intended to augment the show's exploration of memory across mediums, constructed out of field recordings taken by Lucas after meeting JR in Tokyo during the summer of 2017.
The sounds, born during a period of correspondence between the artists, were collaged so as to parallel the generative exercise of memory production.
This configuration of sounds, marked by a certain melancholy intrinsic to nostalgia, served to document the outlines of the artists' experience of that period.
The piece was played within the gallery space, opening a conversation with Lucas' visual expressions mediating the same theme.
JR borrowed heavily from this piece for his ambient selection at The Grove in 2019, cycling through various portions of the work throughout his performance.
Sustain-Release also served as a place of reunion for the estranged friends as Lucas was in New York by chance for that weekend's secular rites.
